Wisconsin drops 4,300 private sector jobs in March

The state of Wisconsin lost 4,500 jobs in March compared with February's totals, including 4,300 private sector jobs. The latest data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed the state seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dipping to 6.8 percent following two months at 6.9 percent, the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development said Thursday. Out of the top 108 cities in the United States, 98 charge consumers more in sales taxes than residents of Milwaukee pay, according to a report from the Tax Foundation. The city of Milwaukee's 5.6 percent sales tax – consisting of a 5 percent state tax and 0.6 percent Milwaukee County, tourism and stadium district tax – ranks 99th in the country among the largest cities in the country. Wisconsin personal income grows 5.2% in 2011

Wisconsin personal income rose 5.2 percent in 2011, slightly outpacing national growth, according to estimates released Wednesday by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. The BEA reported the Badger State had $228.9 billion in total personal income last year, up from $217.6 billion the year before. Per capita, Wisconsin saw 4.8 percent growth to $40,073. Bilingual legal services ‘unique’ to Centro Legal

For two decades, Milwaukee’s south side residents have had a place to turn for legal help, whether they can afford an attorney or not.

Centro Legal provides free bilingual legal services in areas such as family law and criminal misdemeanor defense to more than 800 people each year from its storefront office at 614 W. National Ave.

Heather Ramirez, executive director of Centro Legal, said there is a great need for free legal services in Milwaukee.

“In Milwaukee County Family Courts, 80 percent of the time one or both parties does not have an attorney,” Ramirez said. “It’s a huge high-needs area.”... Read More

Join More Than Two Million Wisconsin Residents on the No Call List

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is reminding consumers of their next opportunity to sign up for the No Call List if they do not want to be contacted by telemarketers.  Numbers registered by Wednesday, November 30 will receive the protections of the state No Call law beginning on January 1, 2012.

“We’re fortunate in this state to have some of the strongest No Call laws in the country,” said Sandy Chalmers, Administrator of the Division of Trade and Consumer Protection.  “If you are not on the list, you are missing out on the protections that 2.2 million Wisconsin residents now receive.”
