Submit Photos and Celebrate Lives of Loved Ones Lost at Life Lights Celebration & Candlelit Stroll

Submit Photos and Celebrate Lives of Loved Ones Lost at Life Lights Celebration & Candlelit Stroll

Celebrate and memorialize the lives of loved ones lost at Horizon Home Care & Hospice’s Life Lights 2011, a one-mile, candlelit sunset stroll; candle lighting ceremony; and slide show.  This fund raiser supports Horizon’s charity care program and tickets include free Milwaukee County Zoo admission, live music by Kyle Feerick and Friday Fish Fry or children’s meal.  This is a wonderful opportunity to pay tribute to loved ones while supporting others at the end of life through charity care.

Life Lights helps continue the healing process after the loss of a loved one, no matter how long ago.  Our culture perpetuates a myth that we “get over” our grief after the loss of a loved one, but that’s not true.  Our relationships with loved ones continue long after they’re gone so to be able to remember and honor those individuals helps us feel connected and continues the healing process.

Milwaukee Public Library: Be a Super Reader

Milwaukee Public Library: Be a Super Reader

The Milwaukee Public Library is encouraging all children 12 years and younger to be a super reader this summer. They can achieve the "super reader" status by reading themselves, reading to someone else or having someone read to them.

The children will earn prizes as they read throughout the summer.

Mayor Tom Barrett said the MPL is the place to be for the "three E's" this summer.

"Education, enlightenment and entertainment," he said. "Now more than ever I encourage kids, parents, and families to visit a Milwaukee Public Library."

Paula Kiely, the library director, is excited to have the summer reading program back again this summer.  "We welcome children and families to join us everyday this summer to help keep those reading skills in top shape for the next school year."

The library also has a program titled "Read stuff - Win Stuff!" geared towards teens, ages 13-18.

The 411 on Easter: history & traditions

The 411 on Easter: history & traditions

Spring is upon us and so are the observances of several religous days, holiday's and traditions. Easter is a celebration of life. It signifies victory of life over death, a time when Christians believe that Jesus of Nazareth was resurrected from the dead after suffering a horrible demise. But how did rabbits who magically lay eggs and all the chocolate and festivities come about?

It is believed that Jesus of Nazareth arrived in Jerusalem, welcomed by people laying palms in his path, a custom usually reserved for people of royalty. Those same people would later seek his death at a place called Calvary.

Cancer Prevention and Survival Cooking Course on April 27

The Cancer Project, a national nonprofit program dedicated to advancing cancer prevention through education and research, is offering a four-session cooking course designed to help Milwaukee residents prevent and survive cancer through proper diet and nutrition.

“The single easiest and best thing most of us can do to prevent cancer or its recurrence is to eat right,” says Jennifer Reilly, R.D., a senior nutritionist for The Cancer Project. “More than a third of all cancer deaths in this country are due to poor diet.”
